The ongoing legal battle between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, stemming from their collaboration on “It Ends With Us,” has escalated into a complex public relations conflict.
Experts suggest that Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, may be facing challenges in managing their public image compared to Baldoni.
In December 2024, Blake Lively filed a complaint with the California Civil Rights Department,
accusing Justin Baldoni of sexual harassment and alleging that he orchestrated a smear campaign against her.
Baldoni has vehemently denied these allegations and responded with a $400 million defamation lawsuit against Lively and Reynolds,
claiming they attempted to tarnish his reputation and take control of the film’s narrative.
Alexandra LaManna, a communications advisor and former White House spokesperson, commented on the situation, stating,
“There are no real winners here, but right now, Blake and Ryan are losing the image war.” She emphasized that pursuing legal action carries reputational risks, especially without overwhelming public support and control over the narrative. LaManna added, “This is a he-said-she-said that is getting messier by the day, and it’s getting harder for Blake and Ryan to come out looking clean.”
Ryan McCormick, a reputation management expert, echoed these sentiments, noting that negative news can reinforce adverse perceptions. He suggested that both parties might have benefited from private discussions to resolve their issues, stating, “It is bad for business (aka their reputations, which directly correlate to earning ability) for something like this to ever see the light of day.”
Lyric Mandell, co-founder of Tutti Agency, highlighted the importance of a measured approach in such disputes. She remarked, “Rather than escalating this battle in such a public way, Lively and Reynolds might have benefited from a quieter, more calculated approach.” Mandell emphasized that while addressing alleged wrongdoing is crucial, allowing the dispute to unfold publicly can cause more harm than good.
The legal turmoil has also affected Ryan Reynolds’ public image. Known for his likable and self-aware persona, his association with the dispute poses a risk to his reputation. LaManna noted, “His connection to this legal mess, whether direct or by association, is not a great look. If this case spirals, it could chip away at his sterling reputation.”
The legal conflict between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni underscores the intricate relationship between legal battles and public perception. Experts suggest that Lively and Reynolds are currently facing challenges in the “image war,” highlighting the necessity for strategic communication and reputation management in high-profile disputes.
