Tasha Ghouri, the former Love Island contestant and Strictly Come Dancing 2024 runner-up, has bravely spoken out about the harsh trolling she faced regarding her deafness.
The reality TV star revealed that discovering online comments mocking her voice was a painful experience
but has inspired her to become an advocate for the deaf community and those facing bullying.
A Shock After Leaving the Love Island Villa
Tasha Ghouri made history on Love Island in 2022 as the show’s first-ever deaf contestant.
The dancer from Yorkshire entered the villa hoping for love and connection, unaware of the negative attention she would receive.
While her journey on the show led her to a fourth-place finish alongside partner Andrew Le Page, her time after the villa was marked by a harsh reality: online trolls mocking her speech and deafness.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Tasha shared how deeply the trolling affected her. “Especially on a big national TV show, you’re putting yourself in a vulnerable position,” she said. “When I came out and saw people making TikToks, taking the mick out of my voice, it did hit me quite hard.”
Tasha, who uses a cochlear implant, had never anticipated that her way of speaking would become a target for ridicule. “It was a shock,” she admitted. “But I quickly realized that I could turn this negative experience into something positive. I could use my platform to raise awareness and stand up for others in the deaf community who might be experiencing the same thing.”
Raising Awareness and Educating the Public
Rather than let the cruel comments discourage her, Tasha decided to take a proactive approach. She has since used her platform to educate others about life with a cochlear implant and the challenges faced by the deaf community. “There are so many people who get bullied for things they can’t control, and I really want to help change that,” she explained.
Tasha highlighted the lack of awareness as a significant issue. “You’d be surprised how many people say, ‘I didn’t know that,’ or ‘I was never taught this.’ It’s often just a lack of understanding,” she said. “That’s why I’m proud to be standing up for the deaf community and raising awareness in a positive way.”
The Impact of Online Trolling
Reflecting on why people resort to online trolling, Tasha shared her perspective: “It can boil down to insecurity or other issues in their own lives. Unfortunately, on a public platform, some people feel entitled to say whatever they want. But I always try to focus on the good and the positives. I never go looking for the negatives.”
Despite the hurtful comments, Tasha has remained resilient and focused on her mission to spread positivity and awareness. She emphasized the importance of empathy and understanding, hoping to encourage others to be more considerate online.
Overcoming Challenges in Her Early Life
Tasha also opened up about the challenges she faced growing up with deafness. “In school, I really struggled because there wasn’t much deaf awareness,” she said. “Teachers would turn away while speaking, or I’d be placed at the back of the class when I needed to be at the front. It was difficult, but it showed me how much further we need to go in terms of accessibility and understanding.”
Her experiences have shaped her passion for advocacy, and she is determined to help create a more inclusive environment for future generations. “I want to use my platform to show that being different is okay,” Tasha stated. “It’s about educating people and spreading awareness so that we can all be more understanding and supportive.”
Moving Forward with Positivity
Despite the negativity she encountered, Tasha has continued to thrive. Following her success on Love Island, she went on to become the runner-up on Strictly Come Dancing in 2024, proving her talent and resilience. Her journey has inspired many, showing that obstacles can be overcome with determination and positivity.
As she moves forward, Tasha remains focused on her mission to advocate for the deaf community. Her message is clear: “Don’t let the negativity define you. Use your voice to make a difference, and always stay true to who you are.”
Through her courage and commitment to raising awareness, Tasha Ghouri is turning her painful experience into a powerful platform for change.
