Sunny Hostin, co-host of *The View*, is vehemently defending her husband, Dr. Emmanuel Hostin, against accusations of committing federal insurance fraud.
The couple, who hired high-profile attorney Mark Geragos to represent them,
is now speaking out against the insurance company, American Transit, which filed a lawsuit against Dr. Hostin and approximately 200 other doctors.
The controversy began when American Transit, an insurance company teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, filed a civil lawsuit last month alleging that Dr. Emmanuel Hostin,
along with several other medical professionals, knowingly provided fraudulent medical services, including arthroscopic surgeries, in order to defraud the company.
In a strongly worded statement to *Page Six*, Sunny Hostin accused American Transit of filing a “frivolous” lawsuit
and using her celebrity status to smear her family’s reputation in the media.
“This company has a history of filing frivolous claims, has been investigated by New York State, and has even been sued by Uber Technologies,” Sunny stated, asserting that American Transit’s actions were a desperate attempt to avoid paying medical claims for people in pain. She argued that the insurance company is attempting to deflect attention from its financial troubles by targeting doctors like her husband.
The lawsuit, according to Hostin, was not only meritless but also malicious, as it used her public profile to launch a media campaign intended to damage her family’s name. She pointed out that American Transit had plastered pictures of her family across tabloid publications, turning the situation into a public spectacle. Hostin emphasized that American Transit was harassing her and her family in an attempt to avoid paying its bills, and she made it clear that they would not be intimidated.
Sunny Hostin also made it known that she was taking legal action against the insurance company. “We have put American Transit on notice and will file a five-million-dollar counter lawsuit for their defamatory claims,” she declared. She further warned that this amount could increase as the damage caused by the false accusations is difficult to quantify. In addition to the monetary damages, Hostin demanded that American Transit withdraw its allegations, pay her husband what he is owed, and issue a public apology.
Dr. Emmanuel Hostin, who is one of 200 doctors named in the lawsuit, is represented by attorney Daniel Thwaites of Thwaites, Lundgren & D’Arcy, a firm with expertise in Civil Rico defense. Thwaites dismissed the allegations as a “blanket, scattershot, meritless lawsuit” filed by a near-bankrupt insurance carrier, underscoring the lack of substance behind American Transit’s claims.
The situation escalated over the weekend when Mark Geragos sent a letter to American Transit’s lawyers, warning that the Hostins would countersue for $5 million if the company did not withdraw its lawsuit and apologize publicly. This legal pushback has only intensified the dispute, and it remains to be seen how the case will unfold in the coming months.
On Sunday, a lawyer representing American Transit, William Natbony of the law firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, responded to the Hostins’ claims. Natbony reiterated that the insurance company’s lawsuit was part of its responsibility to combat “no-fault fraud,” which is reportedly a significant issue in New York. He firmly denied the Hostins’ accusations of improper conduct, stating that such assertions were “without basis.”
As the legal battle between the Hostins and American Transit continues, it is clear that the co-host of *The View* will not back down. She remains resolute in her belief that the lawsuit is an attempt to tarnish her family’s reputation, and she is prepared to fight back in court. The case has not only put the Hostins at the center of a legal controversy but has also drawn attention to the larger issue of insurance fraud and the tactics employed by some companies to avoid paying medical claims.
Sunny Hostin’s response to the allegations reflects both her fierce protection of her family and her commitment to standing up against what she sees as an unjust attack. As the lawsuit progresses, it will likely continue to attract public attention, especially given Hostin’s prominent role on *The View*. The outcome of this legal battle could have far-reaching implications for both the Hostins and the insurance industry, which is already under scrutiny for its practices.
