Jenna Bush Hager Defends Herself After Revealing She Went Into Labor Following a SoulCycle Class: “Don’t Gasp at Me!”
Jenna Bush Hager left everyone in shock during a recent episode of Today with Jenna & Friends
when she shared an unexpected detail about the day she went into labor with her first child,
Mila. Speaking with guest host Ego Nwodim, Bush Hager recalled that she had attended a SoulCycle class just hours before giving birth—
a revelation that led to gasps from the audience and crew.
Bush Hager, however, wasn’t having any of it. “She was very early! Don’t gasp at me!” she playfully scolded,
defending her decision to exercise so late into her pregnancy. She went on to clarify that at the time, she was eight-and-a-half months pregnant, making the moment even more surprising to those listening.
The Chaos of Mila’s Birth
While her intense workout session may have been shocking enough, Bush Hager also recounted the dramatic series of events that unfolded after her SoulCycle class.
Later that same day, during her baby shower, her water broke unexpectedly. In the midst of the excitement, her twin sister, Barbara Bush, called Bush Hager’s husband, Henry Hager, to let him know that she was headed to the hospital. However, he was skeptical of the news.
“[My sister] Barbara called Henry to tell him that I was going to the hospital, and he was like, ‘Those sisters that play pranks on me. I’m not falling for it!’” Bush Hager recalled, laughing.
It took the intervention of one of Today’s producers, Carrie, for Henry to take the situation seriously. Carrie’s husband convinced him that while Jenna and Barbara might enjoy a good joke, Carrie wouldn’t lie about something like this.
“No Henry, I know Barbara and Jenna would act like that to you, but Carrie would never lie to me. So you need to go to the hospital,” Carrie’s husband told him.
Nwodim couldn’t help but find humor in the situation, joking, “So he trusted Carrie more than you?”
Laughing, Bush Hager admitted, “He did! And I basically trust Carrie more than I trust myself.”
An “Inappropriate” Comment During Class
As if the unexpected labor story wasn’t enough, Bush Hager also shared a moment from her SoulCycle class that had her shaking her head.
During the workout, she recalled a fellow class member making a rather inappropriate comment about her pregnant body.
“I was on the bike, and the guy behind me was like, ‘Girl, you’re huge! We’re gonna have to carry you out of here like a Trojan horse!’” she said, imitating the man’s words.
Nwodim was immediately taken aback, agreeing that the remark was out of line. “That’s inappropriate,” she said firmly.
Bush Hager, however, took it in stride, stating that while she didn’t mind people joining in on the class, she preferred that they keep their comments about her size to themselves.
Earning Respect for Staying Active
Despite the surprising nature of her story, Nwodim ultimately gave Bush Hager credit for staying active so late into her pregnancy.
“Kudos to you,” Nwodim said, acknowledging that she wouldn’t have been able to do the same.
Bush Hager’s commitment to working out—even at eight-and-a-half months pregnant—left many impressed, even as others were stunned by the timing of her labor.
Jenna’s Candid and Hilarious Take on Motherhood
This latest revelation is just another example of why Bush Hager is so beloved by Today viewers. She is known for her candid, down-to-earth storytelling, and her ability to find humor in life’s unexpected moments.
From her chaotic hospital trip to her husband’s initial disbelief, her story was one that had both Nwodim and the Today crew laughing. But at its core, it also highlighted Bush Hager’s fearless approach to life—and her ability to handle even the most surprising twists with grace.
