Jenna Bush Hager has never been one to shy away from candid discussions about her personal life, and her latest revelation on Today was no exception.
During the February 18 broadcast, the beloved morning show host opened up about an unforgettable moment in her relationship
with husband Henry Hager—one that involved an unexpected proposal and a surprising rejection.
While co-hosting with Justin Sylvester, the conversation turned to whether or not they had ever been the first to say “I love you” in a relationship.
Jenna quickly confessed that she had not, but she did share an even more surprising detail.
“No, I didn’t say ‘I love you’ first,” Jenna admitted. “But I did propose first—and he said no.”
Her shocking revelation left Sylvester momentarily speechless. Jenna then went on to explain how the moment unfolded.
As she recalled, it all happened after her now-husband, Henry, told her that he loved her. She admitted that she may have been feeling a little extra festive at the time.
“When he said, ‘I love you,’ I might have had one or two holiday cocktails, and I said, ‘Me too! Let’s get married!’”
Jenna’s twin sister, Barbara Pierce Bush, was present during the exchange, and her reaction only made the moment funnier.
“My sister was dancing with us and just slowly danced away,” Jenna said, laughing. “She was like, ‘I’ll leave you two to this.’”
Sylvester burst into laughter at the anecdote, playfully remarking, “She left the train wreck.”
Although Henry initially declined Jenna’s impromptu proposal, the couple ultimately found their happily-ever-after. Jenna has previously shared how Henry took a more traditional approach when he was ready to propose. Before popping the question, he first sought the blessing of her twin sister, Barbara.
“He knew our bond was so important that if he didn’t go to her first, he would be in trouble,” Jenna once shared on Today.
Their love story has continued to capture the hearts of fans, especially as Jenna frequently shares insights into their life together. One particularly memorable moment occurred when actress Emmy Rossum put Jenna on the spot with a tough hypothetical question: If she had to choose between saving her husband or her twin sister from a burning building, who would she pick?
Jenna hesitated, clearly struggling to choose between two of the most important people in her life. As she carefully considered her answer, her co-host Hoda Kotb interjected with a playful reminder: “Henry’s watching.”
Jenna then gave a response that kept things lighthearted while maintaining an air of mystery: “I love my husband, but we’ll have to see.”
Jenna and Henry’s love story has been a central part of her public persona, with fans admiring the way the couple balances humor, love, and mutual respect. Their relationship began in the early 2000s when Henry was working on her father George W. Bush’s re-election campaign. The two tied the knot in 2008 in a beautiful ceremony at her family’s Prairie Chapel Ranch in Texas.
Since then, they have built a wonderful life together, raising three children—daughters Mila and Poppy and son Hal. Despite their busy schedules, Jenna has often spoken about how they prioritize their marriage and family.
Her latest candid confession on Today serves as yet another reminder of her ability to bring humor and honesty into everyday conversations. Whether she’s reminiscing about embarrassing moments or tackling deeper topics, Jenna continues to be a relatable and beloved voice on morning television.
