Eddie Murphy vows to confront David Spade over a comment made on SNL: “He’s the dumbest white bastard I’ve ever met…”

For years, Eddie Murphy and David Spade were on bad terms due to a joke that Spade made on Saturday Night Live in 1995.

However, the long-standing tension between the two comedy legends seems to have finally disappeared, with Spade recently revealing that there are no longer any hard feelings.

A Joke That Sparked a Feud

The conflict between Murphy and Spade began nearly three decades ago when Spade, then a cast member on SNL, delivered a joke during the show’s “Weekend Update” segment.

At the time, Murphy had just faced a major box office disappointment with his film Vampire in Brooklyn.

Spade showed a picture of Murphy and quipped, “Look, children, it’s a falling star. Make a wish!”

The joke didn’t sit well with Murphy, who later revealed that he was deeply hurt by it. In a 2023 interview with The New York Times, Murphy explained why he took offense, saying, “I’m the biggest thing that ever came off that show. The show would’ve been off the air if I didn’t go back on the show, and now you have somebody from the cast making a crack about my career?… I thought that was a cheap shot. And it was kind of racist, I thought—I felt it was racist.”

Spade Confirms They’ve Moved On

During a recent episode of his Superfly podcast, a spin-off of Fly on the Wall, Spade spoke about reconnecting with Murphy at the SNL50: The Anniversary Special. When asked about his relationship with Murphy, Spade confirmed that there was no longer any animosity between them.

“I did see Eddie Murphy,” Spade said. “People asked me if I’m tight with Eddie Murphy. Everything bad has evaporated.”

According to Spade, Murphy was in great spirits at the SNL50 event, participating in sketches and interacting with fellow cast members without any awkwardness.

“There’s absolutely no anything anymore,” Spade explained. “Everyone was cool. He was in sketches, he was upbeat.”

A Memorable Interaction at SNL50

Spade also shared a behind-the-scenes moment with Murphy during the anniversary special. He recalled walking past the Beverly Hills Cop star when Murphy unexpectedly blocked his path with his arm, prompting them to exchange greetings and a hug.

“He was super cool,” Spade said. “I dapped him up. We were friendly, we should’ve taken a picture, ‘cause it was fun to see him, and then there was no weird vibes at the show. It was all good.”

Murphy Shines in SNL50 Sketches

Murphy was one of the highlights of the SNL50 special, bringing back his signature comedic style in several sketches. One of his standout moments was his participation in “Black Jeopardy,” where he hilariously impersonated fellow SNL alum Tracy Morgan. Spade, who had a front-row seat for the sketch, praised Murphy’s performance, saying, “I saw it—hilarious. Good to see Eddie doing Eddie stuff like that.”

Murphy also appeared in a revival of the classic “Scared Straight” sketch, alongside Kenan Thompson and Will Ferrell. Meanwhile, Spade had his own big moment in John Mulaney’s New York musical sketch, where he shared the stage with an all-star lineup of SNL veterans and guest stars, including Maya Rudolph, Adam Driver, Jason Sudeikis, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Kristen Wiig, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Rudd, and more.

Two Comedy Legends with a Shared History

Both Murphy and Spade have left lasting impacts on SNL, albeit in different eras. Murphy joined the show in 1980 at just 19 years old, becoming one of its breakout stars during a turbulent period for the series. Despite the difficulties of that season, he quickly became one of SNL’s biggest names, with memorable characters and impressions that helped keep the show afloat.

Spade, on the other hand, was part of the 1990s SNL era, known for his witty sarcasm and sharp humor. He was one of the show’s “Bad Boys of SNL,” a group that included comedy greats like Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, and the late Chris Farley. Beyond SNL, Spade worked closely with his fellow castmates in movies such as Tommy Boy and Black Sheep.

No More Bad Blood

The reunion at SNL50 proved that time has healed old wounds, and Murphy and Spade have officially put their past behind them. While the 1995 joke may have caused a major rift between them, it’s clear that both comedians have moved forward.

With Murphy continuing his Hollywood success—including an upcoming return in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F—and Spade thriving with his stand-up career and podcasting ventures, the two SNL legends are focused on the future rather than past controversies.

For fans of both comedians, their reconciliation is a refreshing reminder that even long-standing feuds can eventually be resolved.
