Charles Hanson from BBC Bargain Hunt shocked the courtroom by defending his vi0lent actions against his wife, claiming it was done out of LOVE: “From striking to choking—I did it because I cared.”

BBC Bargain Hunt star Charles Hanson Told Police Alleged Headlock Was a ‘Loving Hug’ to Wife

BBC Bargain Hunt star Charles Hanson has found himself at the center of a high-profile court case, with allegations of domestic violence spanning over a decade.

The well-known auctioneer, recognized from television shows like Bargain Hunt and Flog It!,

is currently on trial at Derby Crown Court, where he faces multiple charges related to domestic abuse.

Hanson’s Defense Amid Domestic Violence Allegations

The 46-year-old television personality, who resides in Mackworth, Derby, has pleaded not guilty to charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm,

additional counts of assault, and engaging in controlling and coercive behavior.

The case follows an incident in June 2023 that led to his arrest, with allegations that he placed his wife, Rebecca Ludlam, in a headlock during an altercation while she was pregnant.

During a police interview at St Mary’s Wharf police station on June 15, 2023, Hanson maintained that he did not act aggressively but instead gave his wife a “loving hug.” His statements to police, read in court, described Rebecca as a “fantasist” who “exaggerates things beyond reasonable belief.” According to Hanson, his wife had an emotional outburst, and he attempted to comfort her by embracing her tightly. “I held her really tight. She took it the wrong way. I think at the time Rebecca took offense,” he stated.

Wife’s Testimony Contrasts With Hanson’s Claims

In stark contrast to Hanson’s version of events, Rebecca Ludlam provided testimony detailing a pattern of physical and emotional abuse that she alleges began in 2012, two years after their marriage. According to her account, the physical altercation in question involved more than just a tight hug—she insists that her husband placed her in a headlock during a heated argument.

Courtroom Proceedings and Legal Arguments

The court also heard additional allegations of physical violence, including claims that on May 1, 2023, Hanson pushed his wife twice in their bedroom after she swore at him. In his police statement, Hanson dismissed this claim, explaining that Rebecca had been “waving her arms around” and that he merely gave her a “tiny prod.” He stated, “I did not push her back on the bed. I said, ‘Stop it’ and walked out. Rebecca gets more upset by raised voices.”

Hanson’s defense team, led by barrister Sasha Wass KC, faced an unexpected delay earlier this week when proceedings were postponed due to transport issues. Wass, who had been traveling from London to Derby, was unable to reach court in time, resulting in the trial being adjourned until the following day.

Public Reaction and Next Steps

As the case continues, the public has reacted with shock and concern. Many viewers who recognize Hanson from his television appearances are closely following the trial, awaiting further developments. The proceedings, which began on February 10, are expected to last between seven and ten days.

For now, Hanson remains steadfast in his defense, maintaining that he was only attempting to console his wife during an emotional moment. The court will continue to examine evidence and testimonies in the coming days, ultimately determining whether the television star’s actions were indeed an innocent embrace or part of a troubling pattern of behavior.
