Fans of Rylan Clark were left momentarily puzzled when the presenter unexpectedly had to pull out of his BBC Radio 2 show, due to a sudden health issue. 

However, their surprise quickly turned to delight as Richie Anderson, a well-known face from the 2022 series of Strictly Come Dancing, 

stepped in to fill the gap, bringing his own brand of humor and charm to the airwaves.

Rylan, 34, who has been a beloved host on BBC Radio 2, had to miss his usual Saturday slot after falling ill with what he described as “the sniffles.” 

Richie, who had previously gained fame as a Strictly contestant, quickly stepped into Rylan’s shoes, ensuring the show went on without a hitch. 

On air, Richie explained the situation, revealing the reason for Rylan’s absence, though he couldn’t resist having a bit of fun with the situation.

“The reason I’m in today is because Rylan’s got the sniffles,” Richie said, before adding with a grin, “However, our listeners don’t quite agree. They’ve spotted him out and about a lot this week!” Richie then shared some of the humorous messages sent by listeners, poking fun at Rylan’s whereabouts.

One listener joked that they had seen Rylan in Conwy, trying to wash cars stopped at a traffic light. Another cheekily claimed to have spotted him on a nudist beach in Cornwall, adding, “And his teeth aren’t the only thing that’s massive. He also has very large feet!” The playful banter sparked laughter from Richie and the audience, and Rylan himself took to Instagram to respond. He posted a comment on the clip, humorously dismissing the claims as “Lies,” before thanking fans for their well wishes as he recovered.

Despite the playful jabs, many fans were impressed by Richie’s seamless takeover of the show. On social media, listeners praised Richie for his warmth, humor, and natural hosting ability. Some even began calling for Richie to have his own Radio 2 show, with one fan commenting, “Radio 2, come on now, give Richie his own show, he’s fab! Would have been great in the weekend morning slots or weekday afternoons.” Another wrote, “Richie – so warm and funny. Brilliant person to fill in for Rylan.” Many also praised his chemistry with regular presenter Sally Traffic, with one listener remarking, “Was a brilliant show today. Well done Ritchie – miss you at breakfast. Sally [Traffic] fab as always. Same time next week?”

Richie is no stranger to BBC Radio 2, having had a prominent role on the station in recent years. He had previously announced his departure from the station’s breakfast show in December, following Zoe Ball’s decision to step down. During his tenure, Richie became known for his infectious personality and connection with listeners, making him a popular figure in British radio. His exit from the breakfast show came shortly after Zoe Ball, who had been a longtime host, announced she was leaving her position.

Reflecting on his time on the breakfast show, Richie expressed his gratitude for the experience, sharing an emotional statement in December. “I have had the most amazing six years on this show. It has been so much fun, and I have loved every single second of it,” he said. “It has been so amazing to come here and be accepted by you (Zoe), Tina (Daheley), and the producers.” Richie also spoke fondly of his friendship with Zoe, adding, “I remember when I met Zoe for the first time in the dressing room at It Takes Two, she came in with hugs and it was like I’d known you forever, and you have been the most amazing friend.”

Now, with Richie back on the airwaves in his temporary role, it seems that his fans are eager to see more of him on Radio 2. Whether he’s filling in for Rylan or stepping into a new role entirely, it’s clear that Richie Anderson’s presence on the station is highly valued.
