A relative of Tony Slattery revealed that his death wasn’t due to a heart attack, as initially stated: “He died from a drug overdose…”

Tony Slattery, beloved comedian and former star of Channel 4’s Whose Line Is It Anyway?,

passed away on Tuesday at the age of 65, following a heart attack that occurred just days earlier.

His death has left many in mourning, with his partner of nearly 40 years confirming the news of his tragic passing.

Slattery had long been open about his past struggles with addiction,

and an expert has now suggested that his previous cocaine and alcohol abuse, despite his years of sobriety, may have played a significant role in his death.

Slattery had endured a long battle with substance abuse, and in a 2019 interview, he revealed the harrowing extent of his addiction.

At his lowest points, the comedian would consume as much as 10 grams of cocaine and two bottles of vodka every day. However, after years of struggling, Slattery managed to break free from his addictions, remaining sober for several years before his untimely passing. Despite this, the damage caused by his past habits may have been irreversible, according to Ian Hamilton, an Associate Professor at the University of York.

Hamilton explained the long-term risks of cocaine and alcohol addiction, particularly when it comes to heart health. He told Mail Online that while it was encouraging that Slattery had managed to abstain from drugs and alcohol for some time, the damage could have already been done. He pointed out that cocaine has a particularly harmful effect on the cardiovascular system, including the heart. Alcohol, on the other hand, is a slow-moving risk that creeps up on individuals over time, leading to serious complications. Hamilton noted that at the height of Slattery’s addiction, if his accounts were accurate, he was consuming around 50 units of alcohol a day—a staggering amount considering that the recommended limit is 40 units per week.

The comedian’s final photo, taken on Christmas Day, was shared on his social media account, where he appeared upbeat and reflective. Slattery posted an image of himself wearing a blue striped shirt and adorned with tinsel, accompanied by a caption in which he expressed gratitude for a “wonderful year.” He also wished his followers a “healthy, happy new year,” which, in hindsight, has taken on a poignant significance. Slattery’s post highlighted the joy he had found in recent years, particularly through his podcast and live events, where he interacted with fans and guests.

Tributes have poured in from friends, family, and fans alike, with one of the most heartfelt messages coming from Sir Stephen Fry, a long-time friend of Slattery. Fry, 67, described his friend as “snatched” from the world too soon. In a touching Instagram post, Fry fondly remembered Slattery as a “gentle, sweet soul” who was also a brilliant comedian with an unparalleled wit. He wrote, “A cruel irony that fate should snatch him from us just as he had really begun to emerge from his lifelong battle with so many dark demons.” Fry also reflected on Slattery’s recent achievements, noting how the comedian had been surprised to find that he was still remembered and held in great affection by his fans.

Slattery’s death comes at a time when he was experiencing a career revival, having started his own podcast and hosted live “evenings with” events. His passing serves as a tragic reminder of the toll that addiction can take on an individual’s health, even after years of sobriety. While Slattery had found peace and joy in his later years, the lasting effects of his past substance abuse may have ultimately contributed to his untimely death. His legacy, however, remains intact through his work and the fond memories shared by those who knew and admired him.

Tony Slattery will be remembered not only for his comedic talent and contributions to the entertainment world but also for his resilience in overcoming his personal struggles. His passing leaves a void in the comedy community, but his influence and spirit will undoubtedly live on through his work and the love of his family, friends, and fans.
