Prince Harry opened up about a “de@dly mistake” he made during a 2005 costume party that left even his wife “stunned”: “I still feel terrified thinking about it.”

Prince Harry has openly admitted that one of the most significant errors of his life occurred 20 years ago when he wore a Nazi uniform to a fancy dress party.

The controversial incident, which took place in 2005 when Harry was just 20 years old,

caused widespread outrage after photos emerged showing him dressed in a soldier’s outfit featuring a swastika.

At the time, the young prince was holding a drink and cigarette while posing in the costume, which was deemed deeply offensive by many.

The royal family, particularly Harry’s father, King Charles, quickly responded to the uproar, with Clarence House issuing a public apology.

The statement emphasized that Harry had expressed his regret for causing any offense or embarrassment, but the incident left a lasting stain on his reputation.

The young prince’s actions were widely criticized as insensitive, especially considering the historical significance of the Nazi regime and its devastating impact on millions of lives during World War II.

Harry’s Regret and Efforts to Make Amends

In the years following the incident, Prince Harry sought to make amends for his controversial actions. Speaking in his Netflix series, Harry explained how the event shaped his understanding of history and personal responsibility. “It was probably one of the biggest mistakes of my life. I felt so ashamed afterwards,” he said, acknowledging the profound impact it had on him. “All I wanted to do was make it right.”

To demonstrate his commitment to understanding the gravity of his mistake, Harry revealed that he took several steps to learn from the experience. He shared that he met with the Chief Rabbi of London and visited Berlin to speak with a Holocaust survivor, seeking a deeper understanding of the horrors of the Holocaust. “I could have just ignored it and gone on and made the same mistakes over and over again in my life. But I learned from that,” Harry remarked.

These actions were part of his ongoing efforts to educate himself and ensure that he never repeated such a blunder. Through these conversations, the Duke of Sussex hoped to transform a moment of shame into an opportunity for personal growth.

Unconscious Bias and Personal Responsibility

In the same Netflix series, Prince Harry also addressed the concept of unconscious bias within his family and society at large. He acknowledged that such biases are “no one’s fault,” but emphasized that recognition of these biases must lead to action. “Once it’s been pointed out or identified within yourself, you then need to make it right,” he explained. “It’s education, it’s awareness, and it’s a constant work in progress for everyone—including me.”

Harry’s reflections on unconscious bias align with his broader message of self-awareness and accountability, which he has been vocal about in his public life. The prince has consistently advocated for education, understanding, and the importance of challenging outdated or harmful viewpoints.

Apologies and Reactions to the Controversy

In the immediate aftermath of the 2005 incident, Prince Harry issued an apology, expressing regret for his choice of costume. He said, “I am very sorry if I caused any offence or embarrassment to anyone. It was a poor choice of costume and I apologise.” The apology was received with some degree of acceptance, though the damage to his public image was undeniable. Harry later confessed in an interview that he viewed the incident as a reflection of his immaturity, noting, “Maybe it was a sign of my own immaturity. Something like that I will never do again. It was a stupid thing to do.”

The apology was met with mixed reactions. The Board of Deputies of British Jews, an organization representing Jewish communities in the UK, welcomed Harry’s expression of remorse. They stated, “We are pleased that [Harry has] apologised for his ill-judged actions.” However, they also emphasized the importance of understanding the full weight of the Holocaust, urging broader educational efforts on the subject. “We would now want to concentrate on ensuring that everyone understands the evils and enormity of the Holocaust, and the resonance of the swastika, not only to the Jewish community but to all in the United Kingdom affected by the Second World War against the Nazis,” the group added.

A Step Toward Growth

The Nazi uniform incident remains one of the most regrettable moments in Prince Harry’s early public life, but it has also become a cornerstone of his personal growth and self-reflection. Through his actions, including his meetings with religious and Holocaust survivors, Harry has sought to make amends and demonstrate that he learned from his mistakes. His admission of shame and his commitment to ongoing education on unconscious bias suggest that, while his past actions were regrettable, they have fueled a journey of learning and self-improvement.

As Prince Harry continues to evolve, the lessons from the Nazi uniform incident will likely remain a significant chapter in his life story, reminding him—and others—that growth often comes from facing one’s mistakes and actively working to make things right.
