Jenna Bush Hager stunned TODAY viewers by admitting she feels like a “bad mom” for not teaching her daughter how to stay safe: “Even my dad warned me…”

Jenna Bush Hager recently shared a charming and humorous story about her children’s first encounter with nature when she took them on a trip to her family’s home in Texas.

As a parent, she was keen to give her kids experiences outside the busy and often urbanized environments of New York City, where they typically live.

However, what she didn’t anticipate was how unaccustomed her children, particularly her daughter,

would be to the rural surroundings and wildlife that are a common part of life in Texas.

Jenna recalled the amusing moment when her daughter, who had grown up in the city, was confronted with something as simple as a bug — a sight that was entirely new to her.

The experience became a teaching moment for Jenna, her dad, and her kids,

highlighting the contrast between urban and rural living, and the way different environments can shape a child’s understanding of the world.

Jenna’s story began when she explained how her children, who had grown up in the bustling city of New York, had never encountered many of the natural elements that are part of life in more rural areas, like bugs, farm animals, or the expansive outdoors. While her children had certainly seen animals in zoos or on television, they hadn’t experienced nature in the way that Jenna did when she was a child. Growing up in Texas, she was familiar with the sights and sounds of the outdoors, but she quickly realized that her kids had a very different sense of what was “normal.” Jenna recounted how, on one of their first trips back to Texas, her daughter had an entirely new reaction when she saw a bug. “She had never seen a bug before,” Jenna said with a laugh, pointing out how strange and amusing the situation felt to her. For Jenna, who had spent so much of her childhood surrounded by the outdoors, it was hard to imagine that her daughter could be so unfamiliar with something as ordinary as a bug.

The story became even more entertaining when Jenna’s father, former President George W. Bush, weighed in on the situation. In his usual straightforward manner, he gently reminded Jenna that if her children were going to truly experience Texas, they needed to spend more time outside, where they would be able to encounter the elements of nature they were so unaccustomed to. “My dad was, ‘Jenna, you’re gonna need to get her outdoors,’” Jenna recalled. His advice came with a touch of humor but also a sense of practicality — he knew that to help his grandchildren truly appreciate the beauty and simplicity of rural life, they would need to experience the world beyond the confines of city living. This exchange underscored the generational differences in how people grow up, as well as the different ways of connecting to the land and nature depending on where one lives.

For Jenna, her father’s advice wasn’t just about making sure her children learned how to deal with bugs — it was about giving them the broader experience of what it meant to grow up in a place like Texas. Her father’s emphasis on spending time outdoors was rooted in his own experiences, having spent much of his life in a rural environment where he was constantly exposed to nature, wildlife, and the simple pleasures of being outside. Jenna’s recollection of her father’s advice also highlighted the importance of raising children with a sense of balance, where exposure to both the natural world and modern urban life can provide them with a fuller perspective on life.

Jenna’s approach to parenting reflects a desire to give her children the best of both worlds: the hustle and excitement of New York City, where they can be exposed to a diverse range of cultures and experiences, but also the quiet beauty and simplicity of Texas, where they can appreciate the slower pace of life, open spaces, and the abundance of nature. This balance, Jenna believes, is key to helping her children grow up with a well-rounded sense of the world. By taking them to Texas, she hoped to instill in them an appreciation for the outdoors and all the lessons it can teach, from patience to respect for animals and the environment. While the idea of bugs might have been startling at first, it was a small but important step toward helping her children understand and embrace the natural world.

Through this experience, Jenna was reminded of the difference between her own upbringing and that of her children. Growing up in Texas, she had ample opportunities to run around outdoors, explore the woods, and play on the farm, all while being exposed to the very things that her kids were now discovering for the first time. For her, this contrast served as both a reminder of how much she had learned from her own childhood and a realization of how differently her children would view the world. Jenna’s reflection also served as a way to emphasize the importance of spending time outdoors in today’s digital age, where children are increasingly disconnected from nature due to the prevalence of technology and indoor entertainment.

The story also speaks to Jenna’s relationship with her family, especially with her father, and the way they bond over shared experiences and lessons. Her father’s advice, though lighthearted in its delivery, was grounded in his own values and experiences. For him, the outdoors was a place of peace, relaxation, and learning — and he wanted his grandchildren to understand that. It was a gentle but firm reminder that the world outside their door had much to offer and that they would grow in ways they couldn’t even imagine by spending time there.

In the end, Jenna’s reflection on her daughter’s first encounter with a bug was more than just a funny family anecdote. It was a meaningful story about the ways in which we expose our children to the world around us and the lessons they learn in the process. It was a reminder that, as parents, we often have to push our children out of their comfort zones, whether it’s introducing them to nature or encouraging them to take on challenges they might initially shy away from. And for Jenna, it was a heartwarming reminder of the importance of blending the best of both worlds — city life and country life — to give her children a well-rounded and fulfilling upbringing. Through moments like these, she hopes to give her children the tools to appreciate not only the environment they live in but also the memories and experiences they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
